Introduction

According to Plato, if you want to prevail in Plato's justice in society, then you must introduce education. Plato’s education system is divided into three phases:

  • First Phase (Birth to 18 years)
  • Second Phase ( 21 to 35 years)
  • Third Phase (36 to 50 years)

First Phase (Birth to 18 years)

The first phase of Plato's education system is further divided into two sub-phases:

  • Birth to 6 years
  • 7 years to 18 years

1. Birth to 6 years

During the first sub-phase, a born child shall be taught by the state-appointed mother. Her duty was to narrate the stories of Athen’s bravery, courage, and success, etc.

2. 7 years to 18 years

From 7 years onward, the child will go to a government school. During this time, the child will be taught literature, poetry,  music, and gymnastics (military training)

Furthermore, the music and literature will be censored. He will be taught that music and literature which will give the scene of patriotism, and loyalty towards Athens.

At the ages of 19 and 20 years, a special practical examination will be conducted in military training. After 2 years of practical exams, those who passed exams at the age of 20, will go to the second phase. On the other hand, those who fail will become artisans

2. Second Phase (21 to 35 years)

The second phase of Plao’s education system starts from 21 years to 35 years. In this phase, a person will be taught the basics of sciences, philosophy, and mathematics and military training will continue.

After 15 years there will be another exam. Those who pass the exam will go to the third phase. Similarly, those who fail will become military.

3. Third Phase (36 to 50 years)

The third phase of Plato’s education scheme will continue for up to 15 years. In those 15 years, these people will be taught advanced philosophy, mathematics, and sciences, and they also be attached to the existing rulers.

According to Plato, after the age of 50 years, there will be no examination. Those who complete 50 years are eligible to become rulers. Similarly, one out of them shall be chosen as the Philosopher King.

So, with Plato’s education system, we have three main societal roles. They are Artistins, Military and Philosopher Kings.

Features of Plato’s Education Scheme

Plato’s education Scheme has three main features:

  • This education is state-controlled.
  • This education is compulsory for all the citizens of Athens. It means that everybody must be enrolled.
  • It has equality for both men and women. According to Plato men and women both can get an education and can become the Philosopher King. He made it compulsory for men and women of Athens.
