Haji Shariat Ullha’s Faraizi Movement
Basic Biography
- Haji Shariat Ullah was born in Bengal in 1781 AD.
- He prominent Islamic scholar and reformer
- He travelled to Arabia on Pilgrimage in 1799
- He stayed in Arabia for the next 19 years for a mission for the Bengali Muslims
- He died in 1840
- His work was carried out by his son Mohsin ud Din Till.
Background: Conditions of that time
- The Farazi movement was started by Haji Shariat Ulla. Bengal was the Indian area that came under the control of the British East India Company in 1757.
- Mostly, Hindu landlords interacted with the British.
- Muslims were not able to interact with the British because of the decline of the Mughals.
- In the eighteenth century, Europe saw an industrial revolution. Raw materials from Bengal are being supplied to the Lancashire and Manchester textile industries.
- As a result, the British textile industry developed, whereas Bengal’s textile industry such as making silk was destroyed.
- The formers were only allowed to sell it to the British.
- Hence, the socio-economic conditions of the Muslims were becoming more miserable.
Faraizi Movement
- Haji Shariat Ullah wanted to bring reforms
- The rulers were British, and the majority of elites consisted of Hindus.
- He said that the Muslims were having these issues as a result of their separation from their Islamic duties.
- He argued that any type of British products and institutions such as schools and the Judiciary should be boycotted.
- Haji Shariat Ullah promoted Wahabism and the spread of Islam in this movement.
- He united the peasantry in Bengal against oppression.
- Dadu Mian (son of Haji Shariat Ullah) started a parallel system for the Muslims. This system included separate courts and government for the Muslims of the sub-continent.
Titu Mir's (Nasir Ali) contribution to the Faraizi Movement
- The real name of Titu Mir was Nasir Ali. he was a Bengali freedom fighter. He was mostly influenced by Syed Ahmed Braelvi and his preaching.
- He developed a strand of Muslim Nationalism coupled with agrarian and political consciousness. He was trying to threaten British sovereignty. Therefore, in 1839 the British army killed Titu Mir.
Importance of Faraizi Movement
- He encouraged Muslims at a time when Muslims were disheartened.
- He brought spiritual revival in East Bengal regarding religion.
- He removed the Hindu influence from Islamic practices.
- Some seeds were sown by the Faraizi Movement for Pakistan Movement and Two Nation Theory.
The Aim of the Faraizi Movement
The establishment of different organizations for Muslims
- The main aim of the Faraizi Movement was to establish a political branch for the Muslims of the sub-continent.
- Secondly, the most important point of the Faraizi Movement was to work for the Social Justice of the Muslims of the Sub-continent.
- They also ready the Panchayat system in India.
- They tried to better the religious condition of the Muslims because the Muslims were not properly following the preachings of Islam.
Doctrine
- The main aim of the Faraizi movement was to ensure the Tuba of the Muslims
- To bring the Muslims of the subcontinent to their duties which included standing for their religious and political movement in the subcontinent.
- They tried to spread the teaching of Tauheeq in the sub-continent
- They established the concept of Ustaad and Shagir instead of Peer and Mureed
- They also established the branch of Dar-ul-Arab for the Muslims of the sub-continent.
